Have you ever had a day where the world felt way too stormy? A day where you felt like a willow tree in a wind so fierce you worried your branches might crack or break? Or maybe life has felt so tangled lately that you can’t quite tell which way is up.
In those heavy moments, where do you turn?
For me, I often turn to books. A good book is like a quiet shelter where I can step inside and heal a little… before facing the storm outside again.
The Healing Sanctuary Books Provide
When life knocks us to our knees, we have to toughen up to survive. A willow tree might lose branches in a windstorm, but it’s a survivor. When the sun rises again, its roots are actually stronger from the pressure it withstood. It keeps growing, becoming more beautiful and resilient with time.
Saguaro cacti do the same. They grow thick skin to survive the harsh desert heat and drought. Their challenging circumstances are exactly what enable them to stand tall and strong.
As humans, we are survivors too. We endure the blistering heat and tumultuous rainstorms of life, growing stronger little by little. But while we are busy being strong and surviving, our hearts still crave a safe harbor—a sanctuary to rest and take a breather.
Stories offer us that refuge. Getting lost in a fictional world isn’t just escapism. A good book gives our minds a dedicated place to step away from our own anxieties and simply breathe. It creates a safe space to experience big emotions.
And what about when life is going well? Stories can act as an emotional playground to practice our real-life skills. I’ve learned so much by joining a character in their trials. Haven't we all shouted in our heads, “No, why did you do that?!” when a character makes a bad choice? Suddenly, our minds are rapidly imagining what would have happened if they’d chosen differently.
In fact, psychological research in neurocognitive simulation show that when we read about a character solving a problem, our brains activate the exact same neural pathways as if we were facing that hard decision ourselves. Stories allow us to safely experience different realities, broadening our world without us ever leaving the room.
Bravery in Small Steps (Uncurling Our Defenses)
This magic helps us manage our own lives better, whether you’re reading a picture book to a child to help them imagine different choices, or diving into a heart-tugging romance yourself.
When life gets painful, our natural instinct is to curl up tight and activate our defenses—much like a prickly little hedgehog when faced with the unknown. But a book invites us to walk alongside a character who is also flawed, shy, or facing massive setbacks.
When we watch that character triumph, it helps us "uncurl" a little, too. It builds our empathy, expands our minds, and gently reminds us that we can step out of our comfort zones and be victorious, too.
The Beauty of the Happy Ending
In a world full of constant, cynical media, we need good stories more than ever. Personally, I love stories that end happily and victoriously. I need stories full of hope, forgiveness, and healing.
Those kinds of narratives remind us that the current "tangled" or heart-wrenching chapter we are living in isn’t the final page of our own tale. Good stories give us a blueprint for redemption. Just like the broken willow tree or the giant saguaro, growth happens after the setback.
If you are currently bracing against your own personal hurricane, it’s okay to seek shelter and a little healing in a good story. In fact, I highly recommend it.
What about you? What is a book that brought you comfort or hope during a difficult season in your life?
